JAPANESE WOLF
Canis lupus hodophilax
Japan (1905)
The Japanese Wolf, a miniature of the Grey Wolf family, was the smallest wolf in the world.
The Japanese Wolf was unique among the Islands of Honshu, Skikoku and Kyushu. There it roamed the mofe remote mountainous areas; It's small well proportioned frame perfectly adapted to living in the rugged, heavily forested mountain terrain.
Although the Japanese wolf was a tiny dog-like creature, human fear and misunderstanding of the wolf elevated it to the realm of Gods. It was both feared and revered. Because of this, throughout history it was bestowed many common names such as okami (Great God), magami (True God), yama no kami (Mountain God) and the Howling God.
