A few individual seals have been seen since then, however the last reliable sighting was in Jamaican Waters in 1952. Often lonely lighthouse keepers would claim to have heard the soulful bark of the Caribbean Monk Seal. However, A thorough aerial survey of all possible habitats in 1972 and an expedition in April 1980 failed to find any trace of this gentle creature. The searched concluded that the animal is undoubtably extinct.
