The last stronghold was in Morocco in the Atlas Mountains. This was partly because the area remained one of the wildest and least developed areas in North Africa long into the 20th Century. The proliferation of firearms due to civil wars and the rise of banditry put an end to this remaining population. The last true lion was reported to have been killed in 1922 in the Atlas Mountains.
